She was puzzled over why so many young salespeople seem to have great potential, yet they never break free from the mediocre or rollercoaster performance cycle.Having built my career in a variety of roles, organizations and industries, this discussion felt like dj vu. Ive had it before, and it goes like thisI dont get it. Salespeople come to me, ask for advice and I spend time with them talking about and explaining whats required to succeed, says every exacerbated sales leader.What happens? I ask.Nothing. Over and over again, bedrngnishing.Sales is action not talk.Its no secret that sales can be a tough, sometimes emotionally brutal career. Youll be told No many more times than Yes. Thats reality, and its also why the majority of salespeople quit, fail or simply limp al ong. And as Claire and I continued to discuss, talk is cheap. Its action that requires investment. Sales managers spend too much time talking about things a salesperson could do, should do, plans to do. While well-intentioned, its the wrong conversation.So whats a great salesperson or manager to do when asked for advice from a team member or colleague? My answer is simplegladly give it. But, be prepared to ask for three commitments in return.1. Bring your current plan and/or list of prospective customers every time we meet.2. Make focused, concentrated BD sales calls for 90 minutes, every day.3. Call an extra hour every Friday afternoon after 300.And because sales is action, not talk, I also share one of my favorite videos about what it means to want success. Only a rare few are willing to do what it takes. Most of them end up like the fumbling salespeople Alec Baldwin mocks in Glengarry Glenross. They sit around in the bar pining, Oh yeah, I used to be a salesman. Its a tough racket.Lackluster salespeople are often missing 3 critical Cs Competitiveness Coachability and Conscientiousness. Its important to understand that each of these characteristics can be taught and fostered by sales managers. The problem is that many sales leaders dont know how. As successful salespeople themselves, many were moved up the ladder into management roles. Both empirical and anecdotal data suggests that the most successful high-achievers, in any industry or career, dont make the most successful coaches. For them, the Cs came naturally. The sentiment seems to be something along the lines ofwhatever happens today, we can make it through because theres a Friday-night Netflix binge awaiting us after work.When I hear those words today, though, I just nod and smile then go back to checking emails. Weekends dont exist for working moms like me.What Weekends Mean for Working MothersIts not that spending time with my daughter is a chore though lets be real, occasionally even the most dedicated parents need alone time but in my efforts to restore mother-child bonding time, I stir up these unrealistic to-do lists that only heap more stress on days that should be reserved for relaxation. ChildcareSure, I go home on Friday evening and dont return to work until Monday morning. But my Friday N etflix binges are punctuated with the cry of a baby who wont sleep. My Saturday lie-ins might last an extra 10 minutes past my usual wake-up time. And Sunday bzulaufch? If it happens, it happens with a stroller and a diaper bag in tow. Household ChoresThe weekend serves a different purpose for parents who spend the week at the office. A weekend for me and for my partner, who also works, means catching up on all the chores that fell by the wayside Monday through Friday.Go grocery shopping. Clean the house. Drop the car off for an oil change. Rake the leaves that have been piling up for days, or shovel the snow gathering in drifts on the sidewalk. Run four loads of laundry in quick succession.You get the picture. Time with the KidsIn addition to all of these tedious chores, I feel heightened pressure on Saturday and Sunday to perform for my child. I send her todaycareduring the week, so I overextend myself on the weekend, attempting to make up for lost time together.Spend a few hours at the zoo. Read a book to her. Take her to the park. Snap a photo of her on the slide. Teach her the alphabet song. Break out in a spontaneous dance party. If I had to describe myself in relation to my profession, I would have to say Im precise, dedicated, and tenacious.I am a Caucasian male, and while I have not really experienced any outright discrimination, I have found that male nurses have become much more common in the last two decades, and they seem to gravitate to the critical care settings, especially emergency.As an emergency nurse, I am an integral parte of the acute care gruppe, and the procedures I perform and the actions I take sometimes make the difference between life and death. As an experienced nurse with a sound knowledge of physiology and pathology, my opinions bear weight and I am treated as a colleague by the physicians I work with and not merely an assistant as many people outside of healthcare may view nurses.I would have to rate my job satisfaction as a 7 out of 10. The work itself and the improvements in emergency care over the years are what make the job very satisfying, but increasing government regulations, many of which impede patient care, can make the job frustrating.A very satisfying part of the job is being able to teach patients and to see them take control of their healthcare. A much more satisfying, but thankfully much rarer, event is to be able to bring someone back from the brink of death and know that your actions and knowledge were literally the difference between life and death.My situation is by no means unique. Many people have foun d emergency nursing as their calling in life.What drew me to nursing was 100% employment. Many of my friends spent months after college before they got their first job in the profession they chose. I, however, was employed before I graduated.I learned that it is not all about me. Nursing is important and nurses are an important part of the healthcare team, but the center of the healthcare team is and always has been the patient. His needs and worries come before anyone else in the team, and its important to never forget that the patient is part of the team and not just the object of the team.The emergency department is a place where the strange becomes routine, but even still, sometimes the strange is truly strange. One of the strangest things I have seen was a patient who had a pay phone glued to her ear. She had stopped to make a call when her cell phone died and someone had put epoxy on the receiver of the phone. After her call, she had to call 911 to summon help and the police c ut the cord of the phone and drove her to the emergency department. One of our technicians spent two hours with cotton swabs and solvent to carefully detach her ear from the phone without causing damage. When she left, she kept the phone as a souvenir.I go to work every day because Im paid to do so. It may sound cynical, but reimbursement is a very important part of the job however, no one will stay in nursing for the money. The knowledge that you truly do make a difference and that you can function in a very stressful environment makes the job worth it.Working in the emergency department, you are forced to become a specialist in generalities. In a single shift, you could have a newborn and a patient over 100 years old. Diseases involving any and every system are seen from psychiatric complaints to obstetrics, to orthopedics. The only thing that really makes me question my choice of profession is the increasing and changing regulations.Emergency nursing has plenty of stress, but it usually comes in spurts and you always have the knowledge that when your shift ends, that you leave the stress behind and that the next day will truly be another day with new patients and new experiences. By working 12 hour shifts, I am able to work less days per week and thereby spend as much time as possible with my family and my life outside of work.The salary for an emergency nurse ranges from $25.00 per hour to $35.00 per hour and varies depending on years of experience as well as certifications you have. While I wouldnt turn down a raise, I cant complain about my salary, and Im easily able to live a comfortable lifestyle.Im able to arrange my schedule as I wish and can take as much time off as I want to, within reason. Most hospitals dont offer x number of weeks a year off, rather you earn vacation hours (paid time off or PTO hours).At a minimum, you must have an associates degree in nursing and licensed in the state you want to work of course, the more education you have the better. Also, it is important to become certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Live Support.I would tell a friend to go for it, the job is worth it.
